A little help?
I’m trying to improve my creative writing. Before you hit “unfollow,” let me assure you that I have no intention of using this tumblog as a venue for my amateurish forays into writing. I don’t plan on posting anything I’ve written. This is just for my own gratification and growth.
Anyway, turns out I suck at presenting specific, concrete images. I’m not a...

Tonight was a good night.
Outdoor BBQ on a beautiful, clear, warm late spring night, with good friends and a few beers. A good little buzz, a s’more, and commencement weekend w/family stretched out before me. A complete undergraduate degree behind me with rare Pittsburgh stars overhead. And, in my near future, an entire summer with my two fantastic roommates. What a wonderful evening.

The World Boxing Council on Thursday said it will not schedule Mexican fighters in the state, and 40 immigration rights supporters protested outside Wrigley Field,...

Yet we consistently see rational/hard science as the end all and be all of everything ever.
I’m not being very eloquent this morning but you know what I’m saying?
Like it’s being revealed over and over and over again how fallible ‘science’ is yet the western world is obsessed with it; no…
This isn’t about the fallibility of science (although science does certainly make mistakes,...

What Up, Tumblr?

There would be certain logistical problems in bringing the Eagles into play. At the very least, they’d have to be contacted somehow, which would involve a dangerous journey of its own. What’s more, it’s doubtful that even a great Eagle could make the entire flight from Rivendell to Mordor…

Anatomical Sexism
Here’s a gem from my physiology textbook:

I do not understand how I have legitimately been working on this—my very last undergraduate literature paper—literally all day, and yet have only managed a net gain of like 3 pages. WTF?
This is like the cursed paper from hell. It simply will not ever get longer. Eliot’s ghost is laughing somewhere.

Edit: To clarify on my previous post on academic elitism: saying that I have always been “a bit of an academic elitist” is, as circlegame pointed out, a huge understatement. I have always been hugely academically elitist.
But—I will allow myself a bit of defense—in all of my work teaching teenagers and talking about education and science with teenagers, I have never...

I've Always Been a Bit of an Academic Elitist
In fact in high school I was quite the snob when it came to academia, and have been more or less elitist about academic achievement and ability throughout college.
Now though, having spent several semesters teaching and tutoring at various levels in a few different subjects, a semester in an education class, and with a student teaching placement on the (very near) horizon, I’m completely...

For my British Followers:
What did you think of the PM debate? I didn’t realize the UK had never done televised debates before. In the last US election I was mostly frustrated by the debates because I felt like the candidates largely gave substance-less answers and delivered hollow rhetoric mostly unrelated to the questions asked. Expected and understandable, of course, but annoying. So, I’m just curious:...
