I took a break from my regularly scheduled biology programming to do a little sociology with my students.
I showed them the “girls suck at math” XKCD to get the conversation going. Then we looked at some images of pointlessly gendered children’s chemistry kits and math textbooks, then some stats about women in STEM.
They all had really thoughtful things to say, and some of my boys chimed in with super insightful ideas about messages society sends to women. My girls were all all over it, appropriately outraged by the ridiculously gendered things and stunned by the pay gap.
It felt good. Like I had done something.
