Questions abound as districts shift to merit pay for teachers
It’s a Long Read from the IndyStar, but it’s worth perusing if you’re interested in what jottingmatt and I are having to deal with in Indiana next year.
It’s also worth looking at because other states are eyeballing Indiana and will take points on how to do this themselves.
MD got Race to the Top funds, which means we’re obligated to introduce some sort of merit pay system within the next couple of years.
This is a good article, not just for IN teachers, but for anyone who is interested in the main bullets for and against merit pay. It’s a balanced piece, although in my opinion the take home message is that merit pay is not going to be healthy for the teaching profession.
The stipend bit scares me. I didn’t realize that was becoming part of the conversation around teacher pay.

Why do proponents want to pull down the fence and let school districts wander into the minefield? I suppose I can only guess. It certainly is not out of a deep and abiding concern for open scientific inquiry. Get away from matters touching on religious orthodoxy, and these proponents could not care less about the state of scientific debate. I can’t imagine it’s out of a real desire to promote spirituality. From my perspective, it looks like abuse to the Bible, contorting Genesis into a parody of science. It acknowledges, in word if not deed, fealty to the primacy of science while awkwardly attempting to stuff Biblical creation stories into the architecture of science which was not designed to hold such cargo.

I have fallen in love with Masson’s blog. Any of you Indiana readers should add it to your RSS.
