So what’s the problem?

Well, there’s no *problem*, I guess. I mean, I have no unsolvable problems with this.

But it is a difficult and time-consuming task to create instructional materials for my students for this particular topic. This year is a little easier because I’m drawing on stuff I’ve used in previous years, but I am making a lot of changes based on previous experience. I’m very particular about the images I use and the way the content is phrased, so it’s really a time suck. It’s also important to me that I have these lessons/materials structured in a way that will allow me to never have to lecture for more than about 20 minutes at a time.

(FTR, I think 20 solid minutes of lecture is too long. It’s an improvement over last year, though, and honestly, my students need me to talk them through every part of this particular topic. I haven’t yet figured out an alternative. They’ll do some reading after the lecture, but I refuse to expect my 9th graders to learn photosynthesis from independent reading.)

How long have you taught this subject?

This is my third year teaching photosynthesis to high school students. Prior to that, I taught it to college level intro bio students twice.
