And writing photosynthesis lessons! Hooray for a “do all the work!” call off from work.

Slightly unrelated: I need some new stuff in my Christmas music collection. I am particularly interested in anything that sounds like the Fleet Foxes singing classic carols. Banjos, acoustic guitars, male harmonies…hook me up, Tumblr. What do you recommend?

25 Days of Christmas Music

We’re Going to the Country by Sufjan Stevens

Relevant. Today I’m en route to my rural Midwestern hometown and everything is wonderful.

25 Days of Christmas Music

Remember by Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Possibly my favorite of their original compositions.

25 Days of Christmas Music

Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon [acoustic version]

A lot of people aren’t a big fan of this, but it’s always resonated with me. I like to think of this as my atheist Christmas song.

[I’d still like to post about atheist Christmas, but who knows if I will have any time for that before the holiday.]

25 Days of Christmas Music

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings” by the Barenaked Ladies

Two of my favorite Christmas carols in one catchy, folksy arrangement. Nothing not to love here.

25 Days of Christmas Music

This is the only poppy Christmas song released in the last 20 years that I like. It’s fun and endearing and reminds me of Love Actually, which in turn reminds me of my closest friends. This is a song that never fails to make me smile.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Barbara Streisand

One of the few secular Christmas songs I genuinely enjoy.

25 Days of Christmas—Day 12

Sister Winter by Sufjan Stevens

25 Days of Christmas Music—Day 11

Ding! Dong! Merrily on High

Aside from how pretty and joyful this carol is, I just really love that such a seriously beautiful piece of religious music has such a whimsical name.

25 Days of Christmas Music—Day 10

Good King Wenceslas

I have been given a hard time in the past for professing my love for this particular Christmas carol. It’s great! What’s not to like? Lovely message, usually sung in some variety of British (or occasionally Irish) accent, beautiful when performed by a talented choir, catchy, traditional. It’s truly a wintry song—I associate it more with cold weather than with Christmas particularly.
