Definitely feeling this today, and all year, and all last year too.

It’s really speaking to me.
Favorite Song of the Week Friday, One Year Closer to Death edition
Time by Pink Floyd
Dark Side of the Moon is my New Year’s album.
Just FYI, if you’re not familiar with this song, it opens with a chorus of loud alarm bells. Don’t let that you put you off, though. This is a song that has ranked as a favorite of mine for almost ten years, and every time I listen to it I admire its brilliance.
Favorite Song Friday:
The Avalanche by Sufjan Stevens
“Move it fast, move it along…come on life…”
There is a wonderful, plodding determination to this song. It alludes to a deep and satisfying fellowship with other humans—“I trust when you labor.” We must rely completely on the labor of others as we go about our lives, and this seems to be a particularly salient sentiment given current American politics.
But this song does a lot for me on a personal scale as well. Listening to it inspires me to persevere, to embrace the fact that life is moving right along and I need to urge myself to go along with it. It’s a soft determination, though, and honest—Sufjan never weighs things down with false optimism or reassurance.

(also Paul Simon is perfect)
Favorite Song Friday:
Fixing a Hole by the Beatles
This song was actually not inspired by the impending hurricane; I had it mentally cued up a few days before I even started caring about the storm.
It was inspired by the fact that my mind wandered constantly all week, and this weekend I need to crack down on that nonsense, focus, and get my first unit maps written. Also I listened to my Beatles collection all week on my commute.
Favorite Song Friday:
God only Knows by the Beach Boys
Sappy? Absolutely. But also just a wonderful, beautiful song. Moving always makes me sentimental.*
*everything makes me sentimental but moving even more than most things
After a long hiatus (July was busy!), I welcome you back to Favorite Song Friday.
Ready to Start by Arcade Fire
I listened to The Suburbs for weeks last fall when it was released. During my crazy week of driving, with lots of car time to kill, I returned to it a few more times. It’s just a brilliant album.
“My mind is open wide,
Now I’m ready to start.”
